\fBSubversion\fP یک سامانه کنترل نگارش است که امکان نگهداری نگارش‌های پیشین فایل‌ها و دایرکتوری‌ها (معمولاً کد منبع)، ثبت تاریخچه تغییرات مبنی بر اینکه چه کسی، چه زمانی و چرا تغییرات رخ داده است، و مواردی از این دست را، مشابه CVS ،RCS یا SCCS، فراهم می‌کند.
\fBSubversion\fP یک نسخه واحد از منابع اصلی را نگه می‌دارد. این نسخه «مخزن» (\(lqrepository\(rq) نامیده می‌شود؛ و حاوی تمام اطلاعات لازم برای استخراج نگارش‌های پیشین آن فایل‌ها در هر زمان است.
