Subversion یک سامانه کنترل نسخه است که به شما امکان می‌دهد نسخه‌های پیشین فایل‌ها و دایرکتوری‌ها (معمولاً کد منبع) را نگه دارید، سابقه‌ای از اینکه چه کسی، چه زمانی و چرا تغییرات رخ داده‌اند را ثبت کنید، و غیره؛ مشابه CVS، RCS یا SCCS.
\fBSubversion\fP یک نسخه منفرد از منابع اصلی را نگه‌داری می‌کند. به این نسخه، «مخزن» (\(lqrepository\(rq) مبدأ گفته می‌شود؛ این مخزن شامل تمام اطلاعاتی است که امکان استخراج نسخه‌های قبلی آن فایل‌ها را در هر زمان فراهم می‌کند.
