سامانه Subversion یک سیستم کنترل نسخه است که به شما امکان می‌دهد نسخه‌های قدیمی
فایل‌ها و دایرکتوری‌ها (معمولاً کد منبع) را نگه‌داری کنید، گزارشی از اینکه چه کسی،
چه زمانی و چرا تغییرات را اعمال کرده است داشته باشید، و غیره؛ مانند CVS، RCS یا SCCS.
\fBSubversion\fP یک نسخه واحد از منابع اصلی را نگه‌داری می‌کند. به این نسخه «مخزن»
(repository) منبع گفته می‌شود؛ مخزن شامل تمام اطلاعات لازم برای امکان استخراج
نسخه‌های پیشین آن فایل‌ها در هر زمان است.
