سامانهٔ Subversion یک سیستم کنترل نسخه است که به شما امکان می‌دهد نسخه‌های پیشین فایل‌ها و دایرکتوری‌ها (معمولاً کدهای منبع) را نگهداری کنید و گزارشی از اینکه چه کسی، چه زمانی و چرا تغییرات را اعمال کرده است ذخیره نمایید؛ مشابه ابزارهایی مانند CVS ،RCS یا SCCS.
\fBSubversion\fP یک نسخهٔ اصلی و واحد از منابع را نگهداری می‌کند. به این نسخه «مخزن» (repository) مبدأ گفته می‌شود؛ مخزن شامل تمام اطلاعات لازم برای استخراج نسخه‌های پیشین فایل‌ها در هر زمان است.
