Subversion یک سیستم کنترل نسخه است که به شما امکان می‌دهد نسخه‌های پیشین فایل‌ها و دایرکتوری‌ها (معمولاً کد منبع) را نگه دارید و سابقه‌ای از این‌که چه کسی، در چه زمانی و چرا تغییراتی ایجاد کرده است داشته باشید؛ شبیه به CVS، RCS یا SCCS.
\fBSubversion\fP یک نسخهٔ واحد از منابع اصلی را نگهداری می‌کند. به این نسخه، \(lqمخزن\(rq (repository) منبع گفته می‌شود؛ این مخزن شامل تمامی اطلاعات لازم برای استخراج نسخه‌های پیشین آن فایل‌ها در هر زمان است.
