برنامه Subversion یک سیستم کنترل نسخه است که به شما امکان می‌دهد نسخه‌های پیشین فایل‌ها و دایرکتوری‌ها (معمولاً کدهای منبع) را نگهداری کنید، سوابق اینکه چه کسی، چه زمانی و چرا تغییرات رخ داده‌اند را حفظ نمایید، و غیره؛ مانند CVS، RCS یا SCCS.
\fBSubversion\fP یک رونوشت واحد از منابع اصلی را نگه‌داری می‌کند. به این رونوشت، \(lqمخزن\(rq (repository) منبع گفته می‌شود؛ این مخزن شامل تمامی اطلاعات لازم برای استخراج نسخه‌های پیشین آن فایل‌ها در هر زمان است.
