برنامهٔ Subversion یک سامانهٔ کنترل نسخه است که به شما امکان می‌دهد نسخه‌های قدیمی فایل‌ها و دایرکتوری‌ها را (معمولاً کد مبدأ) نگه‌داری کنید، گزارشی از این‌که چه کسی، در چه زمانی و چرا تغییرات را اعمال کرده است ذخیره نمایید، و امکاناتی مشابه در CVS، RCS یا SCCS.
\fBSubversion\fP یک نسخهٔ واحد از منابع اصلی را نگه‌داری می‌کند. این نسخه \(lqمخزن\(rq (repository) نامیده می‌شود؛ این مخزن شامل تمام اطلاعات لازم برای استخراج نسخه‌های پیشین آن فایل‌ها در هر زمان است.
