ابزار \fBgrepmidi\fR یک تجزیه‌کننده ساده برای فایل‌هایی با قالب خام MIDI فراهم می‌کند. این ابزار به هیچ وجه کامل نیست، اما امکان درک ساختار پایه‌ای آهنگ در \fIfile\fR را به دست می‌دهد؛ به این معنا که نت‌های تکی را نمایش نمی‌دهد، بلکه صرفاً اطلاعات متای گنجانده‌شده در فایل MIDI را نمایش می‌دهد. همچنین \fBgrepmidi\fR می‌تواند برای بررسی اینکه آیا یک فایل MIDI مشخص حاوی خطا است یا خیر مفید باشد.

می‌توان بیش از یک \fIfile\fR را در خط فرمان مشخص کرد. گزینهٔ \fB-f\fR به \fBgrepmidi\fR دستور می‌دهد نام فایلی را که هم‌اکنون در حال بررسی است به ابتدای هر خط از خروجی اضافه کند.
