برنامه \fBcxpm\fP می‌تواند برای بررسی قالب هر فایل XPM (نسخه‌های ۱، ۲ یا ۳) استفاده شود.
در هنگام بروز خطا، برخلاف \fBsxpm\fR، دستور \fBcxpm\fR یک پیام خطا چاپ می‌کند که مشخص می‌سازد تجزیه‌کننده (parser) در کجا متوقف شده است.
این پیام باید به یافتن اشکال موجود در فایل XPM کمک کند، اما نباید انتظار بیش از حدی از آن داشته باشید.
این برنامه حتی نزدیک به یک ابزار اعتبارسنجی کامل (مانند lint) برای XPM نیست.
نخست اینکه در اولین خطایی که با آن مواجه شود متوقف می‌شود؛
بنابراین ممکن است برای تجزیه موفقیت‌آمیز فایل، چندین چرخه اصلاح و آزمایش مجدد لازم باشد.
دوم اینکه \fBcxpm\fP تنها قالب ساختاری فایل را بررسی می‌کند.
برای مثال، اگر تصویر پیکسلی شما از رنگ‌هایی فراتر از توان سیستم استفاده کند، همچنان ممکن است در نمایش آن با مشکل مواجه شوید.
به این نکته توجه داشته باشید.
